OAKLAND ENHANCEMENT MILLAGE

On August 4, 2026, voters in Oakland County, MI, will be asked to consider a new Regional Enhancement Millage to support all public schools in the county and eligible public school academies. A regional enhancement millage is the only mechanism school districts may use to increase per-pupil funding. If the millage passes, every penny generated by this proposal would be distributed to all public school districts and eligible public school academies in Oakland County at an average rate of $781 per student.

A Regional Enhancement Millage is a voter-approved property tax that allows public school districts within a county to generate additional funding beyond what is provided by the State of Michigan under Proposal A (1994).

Why Districts Are Considering This Millage?

School costs continue to rise faster than state funding, due to inflation. There are no other options for school districts to raise funding other than regional enhancement millages. Bond and sinking fund dollars are restricted

Districts are managing...

  • Teacher staffing and retention issues
  • Increased student academic, social-emotional, and medical needs
  • Rising service and supply costs
  • Substitute teacher shortages

If the millage passes, funds could be used for...

  • Staff recruitment and retention to maintain excellent staff by increasing teacher pay
  • Stabilizing general fund budgets
  • Maintain appropriate staff-to-student ratios
  • Expand professional development
  • Enhance student wellness supports
  • Improve and/or maintain safety and security initiatives
  • Maintain and strengthen district programming

(actual use would be determined by each school district)

This proposal would provide local flexibility and control.

  • Each school district can use the funds where they are most needed.
  • If one district needs to enhance the teacher pay scale to retain talented staff, another needs to purchase new school buses to replace an aging fleet, and yet another needs to hire additional mental health professionals to support data-based student needs, this millage would allow for such flexibility.
  • Regional enhancement funds would flow directly to districts and would be incorporated into their annual operating budgets, the same public budgeting process used for all district spending.

How did the Enhancement Millage Get Placed on the Ballot?
